Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim*: "And it has been narrated from more than one of the scholars of knowledge: that the People of the two Books before us were only commanded to rely on sighting [the moon] also in their fasting and their acts of worship, and they interpreted accordingly the saying of Allah the Exalted:
decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you
[Al-Baqarah 2:183]
But the People of the two Books altered [their religion], and for this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade advancing Ramadan by one day or two days. The jurists explained this by what is feared: that something not part of the prescribed fasting might be added to it, just as the People of the Book, among them the Christians, added to their fasting. They placed it between winter and summer and established a method of calculation by which they identify it"
.

The Shaykh : In my copy, it says "they identify it by it." Who agrees with me?
The reader: It says: In a thousand [copies] it is "they identify it by it," and it is a distortion by the scribe. And in T "they identify it by it".

The Shaykh : In my copy, it says "they identify it by it."
The reader: "And this hadith can be cited as evidence for the specific prohibition of their festivals, since their festivals are known by the Book and by calculation, and the hadith contains a general statement
Or it can be said"
.

The Shaykh : The important thing is that we have benefited from this discussion what we mentioned yesterday: that the time for the acts of worship of those before us was by what? By the new moons. But they are the ones who distorted and altered it. As for taking it from the verse, there is a problem with that
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you
[Al-Baqarah 2:183]
, for the comparison here is with the writing. Yes, it is a comparison of the writing with the Book, and it does not necessitate that they agree in time. Yes.
The reader: "Or it can be said: If we are forbidden from doing so in the festival of Allah and His Messenger, then it is even more so and more emphatic in other festivals and seasons, because of what is involved in that of the illiterate Muslim community imitating the other nations. In summary, the hadith implies that this Ummah is distinguished by the attribute by which it differs from others, and this implies that avoiding similarity to the nations is closer to achieving the fulfillment of this distinctiveness.
Also, in *the two Sahihs*, it is narrated from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf that he heard Mu'awiyah in the year of Hajj on the minbar, and he took a lock of hair that was in the hand of a guard, and said:
Where are your religious learned men? I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbidding this (false hair) and saying, 'The children of Israel were destroyed when their women started using this.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 5932
And in a narration by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib—in the Sahih—Mu'awiyah said one day:
You have innovated a bad dress
"
.

The Shaykh : In our copy, it says "you have innovated."
The reader: No, in my copy there is nothing [extra]; it did not mention it, but rather it said "you adopted," and in Muslim it is as it is written.

The Shaykh : You have innovated.
The reader: Yes "
You have innovated a bad dress, and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the false [hair]. He said: A man came with a stick that had a rag on its head. Mu'awiyah said: Is this not the false [hair] إنكم أحدثتم زي سوء ، وإن نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن الزور .
.
Qatadah said: "He means what women use to increase their hair, namely rags"
.

The Shaykh : Now, they increase their hair with something like hair that never differs from hair. This is one category. Yes, and another category cuts off their heads, meaning these have gone to an extreme in one direction and these have gone to an extreme in another direction. I mean, among the women, some like to increase their hair, and some do not like that. We ask Allah for well-being.
