The reader: "And among what indicates from the Qur'an the prohibition against imitating the disbelievers is His saying, the Exalted:
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment. يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تقولوا راعنا وقولوا انظرنا واسمعوا وللكافرين عذابٌ أليمٌ
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
Qatadah and others said: The Jews used to say it in mockery, so Allah disliked it for the believers to say what they said. He also said: The Jews used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Ra'ana sam'ak, mocking with it, and it was a bad thing among the Jews.
Ahmad narrated from 'Atiyyah who said: Some people from the Jews would come and say: Ra'ana sam'ak, until some of the Muslims said it, so Allah disliked for them what the Jews had said.
'Ata said: It was a phrase among the Ansar in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.
Abu al-'Aliyah said: The polytheists of the Arabs, when they were telling each other news, one of them would say to his companion: Ar'ini sam'ak; so they were prohibited from that. Al-Dahhak said the same.
All of this makes it clear that the Muslims were prohibited from saying this word because the Jews used to say it. Even if it was a bad thing among the Jews and not a bad thing among the Muslims, it is because of the imitating of the disbelievers in it, and their paving the way to achieve their purpose"
.

The Shaykh : This is what the author (may Allah have mercy on him) held regarding the reason for the prohibition of saying "Ra'ana." It was said that the reason for the prohibition is so that the listener does not think it is from recklessness.
