Commentary on Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "Also, it is narrated from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and walling. And he (further) said: If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange.
Sahih Muslim 934
Narrated by Muslim. The hadith condemns the one who calls with the call of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, and informs that some of the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance are not abandoned by all people, as a condemnation of the one who did not abandon it. And all of this necessitates that whatever was of the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and their actions, it is condemned in the religion of Islam; otherwise, there would be no condemnation in attributing these abominations to the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. And it is known that their attribution to the pre-Islamic age of ignorance is in the manner of condemnation. This is like His saying, the Exalted and Majestic:
and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance
[Al-Ahzab 33:33]

And from that is His saying to Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he rebuked a man for his mother:
You are a person who has (remnants of) Ignorance in him
Sahih Muslim 1661c
. For it is a condemnation of that character and of the characters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance that Islam did not bring."
.

The Shaykh : did not bring
The reader: it Islam
"And from that is His saying, the Exalted:
When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts chauvinism - the chauvinism of the time of ignorance. But Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers
[Al-Fath 48:26]
For the attribution of zeal to the pre-Islamic age of ignorance necessitated its condemnation, so whatever was of their characters and actions, it is likewise.
And from this is what al-Bukhari narrated in *his Sahih* from 'Ubayd Allah"
.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And from this, what is with us.
The reader: "And from this is what al-Bukhari narrated in *his Sahih* from 'Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Yazid that he heard Ibn 'Abbas say:
Following are some traits of the people of the pre- Islamic period of ignorance (i) to defame the ancestry of other families, (ii) and to wail over the dead." 'Ubaidullah forgot the third trait. ثلاث خلال من خلال الجاهلية : الطعن في الأنساب والنياحة، ونسيت الثالثة
Sahih al-Bukhari 3850
Sufyan said: "
And they say: It is seeking rain from the stars ".
And Muslim narrated in *his Sahih*"
.

The Shaykh : Seeking rain and not the stars? It is the stars.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Yes.
The reader: "And Muslim narrated in *his Sahih* from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two (things) are found among men which are tantamount to unbelief: slandering one's lineage and lamentation on the dead.
Sahih Muslim 67
, So his saying: 'They are disbelief in them' means that these two characteristics are disbelief that is present in people, so the characteristics themselves are disbelief, since they were from the actions of the disbelievers and they are present in people. But not everyone in whom a branch of the branches of disbelief is present becomes a disbeliever in absolute disbelief until the reality of disbelief is present in him. Just as not everyone in whom a branch of the branches of faith is present becomes a believer until the foundation of faith is present in him. And there is a difference between the definite 'kufr' (disbelief) as in his saying, (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is nothing between a person and disbelief except abandoning Salah.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 464Sahih (Darussalam)
and the indefinite 'kufr' in affirmation"
