The questioner : Also, he asks: Does the farewell circumambulation have a fixed number of circuits, or does a person circumambulate as many times as he wishes, one, five, or ten, as long as he goes around the Ka'bah?

The Shaykh : If the term "circumambulation" is used without qualification, it refers to the prescribed circumambulation, which is not less than seven circuits and not more than seven.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Similarly, when we say "prayer," we mean the prescribed prayer with its specific form of bowing, prostration, standing, and sitting. Therefore, when "circumambulation" is used without qualification, it refers to circumambulating the House. It is established in the two Sahihs and others, in a hadith from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No one should depart until his last act is at the House. لا ينفر أحد حتى يكون ءاخر عهده بالبيت
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:969
And in a narration by Abu Dawud:
until he performs the last circumambulation of the House (the Ka'bah). حتى يكون ءاخر عهده الطواف بالبيت
Sunan Abi Dawud 2002Sahih (Al-Albani)
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And when "circumambulation" is used without qualification, it means seven circuits. Yes.
