The Shaykh : Among the benefits of this hadith is that water is pure and purifies from all ritual impurity, whether the impurity is severe, such as the impurity of a dog, or mild, such as the impurity of an infant who has not eaten food, or something in between. And whether it is the purification of a state of ritual impurity (hadath) or the purification of physical filth (khabath), water purifies it.
Among the benefits of this hadith is that the original state of water is purity, based on his saying: And on this basis, if we are in doubt about water, whether it is pure or impure, it is considered pure.
Among the benefits of this hadith is that if water is changed by a pure substance, it remains pure, based on his saying:.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the purity of water if a person dips his hand in it after waking up from sleep at night, even though the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited a man from waking up from sleep at night and dipping his hand in the vessel until he washes it three times. However, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say that the water becomes impure; he only prohibited the dipping. And since he did not say that it becomes impure, it falls under the generality of this hadith that it remains pure, retaining its purity.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the permissibility of specifying a Sunnah by scholarly consensus (ijma'), based on his saying: And we said that this is specified by consensus in that if water is changed by impurity, it becomes impure. However, this specification may be contested regarding its establishment by consensus, because there are texts that hint that what is changed by impurity is impure, as we will mention, if Allah wills, later.
