The questioner : Also, a group said they asked me to buy for them items from the sacred places, such as a prayer mat, a shroud, henna, and a mushaf.

The Shaykh : As for prayer mats, if they asked you to buy them because mats are more available in that place than elsewhere and may be cheaper, there is no harm. However, if the belief is that mats bought from there have a special merit in virtue over others, that is not correct, and you should not buy them for them based on that belief. As for the shroud, it is also not prescribed for a person to buy his shroud from those places, nor to wash it with Zamzam water, because that is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions. Rather, seeking blessing from a shroud is only in what is established by explicit text, namely what is proven by the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a garment was gifted to him, and a man from the Companions asked him for it. The people said, "How do you ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for that, when you know that he does not turn away a supplicant?" He said, "I want it to be my shroud." And it became his shroud.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Likewise, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to shroud his father, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi, with the garment of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did so. These shrouds that were from the clothing of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are permissible for a person to seek blessing from. However, the idea that they are from Makkah or al-Madinah has no basis for seeking blessing.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.

We presented these questions and inquiries to Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-'Uthaymeen.
