Explanation of the Book of Purification-10

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes, and from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding the description of wudu', he said:
Then he (Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)) wiped his head, inserted his index finger in his ears and wiped the exterior of his ears with thumbs ثم مسح برأسه ، وأدخل إصبعيه السباحتين في أذنيه ، ومسح بإبهاميه ظاهر أذنيه
Bulugh al-Maram 36
.
This is regarding the description of wiping, specifically wiping the ears. Are the ears wiped? The answer is: Yes, the ears are wiped along with the head because they are part of it. However, the manner of doing so is to insert the index fingers into the ears. The index fingers are the ones between the thumb and the middle finger; they are called that because a person points with them when glorifying Allah, and when cursing or insulting. His saying "into his ears" means into the ear canals. The index fingers were chosen because they are the ones usually used for pointing and gesturing, so they were specified over the other fingers. And his saying: "and wiped the outer part of his ears with his two thumbs" — the thumbs are well known, and "the outer part" means the outer surface of the ears, which is the side facing the head. As for the cartilage, it is not obligatory to wipe it; rather, the wiping is specific to the ear canals and the outer surfaces of the ears only.
