Benefits of the Hadith: “Complete your ablution, and interlace your fingers…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : This hadith contains several benefits, among which are:
The obligation of completing the ablution. This is if we understand “completing” to mean covering and including all parts. However, if we understand “complete it” to mean perform it in its full form, then it is obligatory in terms of covering all parts, and recommended in terms of the quantity of water used.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) care for perfecting the ablution, and that one should not be negligent in it.
Among its benefits is that if a person is commanded to complete the ablution, which is one of the conditions of prayer, then perfecting the prayer is even more so. That is, if we are commanded to be careful about the conditions of prayer and attend to them, then the prayer itself is even more deserving of care. Thus, it indicates that it is obligatory to attend to the prayer.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the command to interlace the fingers. Is this command for obligation?
There is a detail here: if the fingers are very close together such that water does not reach between them, then interlacing is obligatory. If they are spread apart, then interlacing is not obligatory.
If someone asks: Is there a prescribed manner for interlacing the fingers, or is it simply interlacing with any finger you wish in any manner you wish?
The answer to the second part is that the command is obligatory.
But with which finger do you begin?
We say: Begin with the little finger of the right hand, then the ring finger, then the middle finger, then the index finger, then the thumb. For the left hand, it is the reverse: begin with the thumb and end with the little finger.
Among the benefits of this hadith is the prescription of exaggerating in sniffing water into the nose, based on his saying:
Exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose بالغ في الاستنشاق
to the extent that it reaches the possibility of water descending into the stomach. The evidence that this is the limit of exaggeration is the exception in his saying:
unless you are fasting إلا أن تكون صائما
Sunan Abi Dawud 2366Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
Among the benefits of the hadith is that what reaches the stomach from a drink via the nose is like what reaches it via the mouth. Is that clear? Based on his saying:
unless you are fasting إلا أن تكون صائماً
Sunan Abi Dawud 2366Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Among the benefits of this hadith is that it is not recommended for a fasting person to exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose, whether his fast is voluntary or obligatory.
Among the benefits of this hadith is taking precaution, because exaggerating in sniffing water into the nose for a fasting person might cause water to descend into his stomach, so the person takes precaution and does not exaggerate.
If someone asks: What if a person is harmed by exaggerating, because some people are harmed by it, resulting in congestion in some parts of the nose, or sensitivity, or something similar? We say: It is sufficient to do so by letting water enter his nostrils.
Can it be inferred from this that sniffing water into the nose is obligatory?
Someone might say: It indicates that sniffing water into the nose is obligatory, based on his saying:
Exaggerate in it بالغ فيه
, and the characteristic of exaggeration is not realized unless the original act is present.
It might also be said: It does not indicate obligation, because the command regarding the characteristic is a command to do it when the act is performed. It is said: Exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose if you sniff. However, it has been established for us that the noble verse indicates the obligation of rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose, because they are part of the face.
Among the benefits of this hadith is that the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) command to one person from the Ummah is a command for everyone. For this reason, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) use such hadiths directed to one person as evidence for the general public, and that is the case. The Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) address to one person from the Ummah is an address to the entire Ummah until the Day of Resurrection.
If someone asks: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say to Abu Burdah ibn Niyar regarding the goat:
it will not suffice for anyone (as a sacrifice) after you إنها لن تجزئ عن أحد بعدك
Sahih Muslim 1961i
, and this is a specification? What is the answer?
The answer is from one of two angles:
Either we say: This is the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) explicit statement regarding its specificity. The fact that he explicitly states its specificity is evidence that if he had not specified it, the ruling would have been general. For this reason, when Allah the Exalted said:
and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her وامرأة مؤمنة إن وهبت نفسها للنبي إن أراد النبي أن يستنكحها
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
, he said:
exclusively for you خالصة لك
, which indicates that what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not specify is general for him and for the Ummah. This is one angle.
The second angle is that the intended meaning of “after you” here is the afterness of the state and characteristic. That is, it will not suffice for anyone who has not reached the state you have reached. This second view is the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), because he says: “The rulings of the Shari'ah are built upon descriptions, causes, and meanings, not upon individuals”, because people are equal in the ruling of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so no one is specified by name because he is so-and-so, but rather by his characteristic, not by his identity. And what the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) held is the truth, meaning: The Shari'ah cannot specify an individual by name because he is so-and-so, but there must be a characteristic; if it is found in another person, the ruling is established for him.
He said: “And Abu Dawud has a narration:
When you perform ablution, rinse your mouth إذا توضأت فمضمض
”
:
Based on this, the hadith of Laqit mentions sniffing water into the nose and mentions rinsing the mouth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly commanded rinsing the mouth:
When you perform ablution, rinse your mouth إذا توضأت فمضمض
. The compiler (may Allah have mercy on him) intended by citing these evidences indicating the obligation of rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose to emphasize the point. Otherwise, there is no doubt that the nose and mouth are included in the face.
