Exaggerating in Sniffing Water, Except When Fasting

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is it permissible to sniff water vigorously during the day in Ramadan for one who is fasting?

Answer: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to al-Qayt ibn Shabrah:
Perform ablution in full and make the fingers go through the beard and snuff with water well except when you are fasting.أسبغ الوضوء وخلل بين الأصابع وبالغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائمًا
Sunan Abi Dawud 142Sahih (Al-Albani)
. He (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to perform the ablution thoroughly, then said:
and sniff water up into your nostrils, thoroughly, unless you are fasting.وبالغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائمًا
Sunan Ibn Majah 407Sahih (Darussalam)
; this indicates that the fasting person rinses his mouth and sniffs water, but he does not exaggerate to the extent that he fears water reaching his throat. As for sniffing water and rinsing the mouth, they are obligatory in the ablution and the full ritual bath, because they are obligatory in them for the fasting person and for others.
