The Shaykh : The author began with the hadith: "Anas said:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to remove his ring when entering the lavatory كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل الخلاء وضع خاتمه
Bulugh al-Maram 87
It was narrated by the four, and it is defective"
:
And he mentioned its defect at the bottom of the book.
When the Prophet entered the toilet كان إذا دخل الخلاء
Sunan Ibn Majah 303Da'if (Darussalam)
Meaning: when he intended to enter it.
He removed his ring وضع خاتمه
Meaning: he removed it from his finger and placed it before entering the place of relief with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear his ring on either his left or his right hand, and some of them mentioned that he wore it on his left hand more often than on his right. He used to wear a ring because it was said to him: "The kings do not accept a letter unless it is sealed." So he made a ring and engraved on its stone: Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, with "Muhammad" at the bottom, "Messenger" in the middle, and the Name of Allah at the top. So when he finished the letter, he sealed it with this ring. The reason he (may Allah's prayers and blessings be upon him) chose to have his ring on his hand was that it was safer for him from being lost and more secure from being tampered with, especially since in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), most of their clothing was an izar and a rida, and there were no pockets to put these things in. So if he had put it in his rida and tied it, it might have been tampered with.
