The Shaykh :"And from Matarf ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Shakhr, from his father, who said: Bulugh al-Maram 2:88"
He did not mention whether this prayer was a voluntary one or an obligatory one? But that does not concern us much, meaning it could be an obligatory prayer or a voluntary one. And his saying: the humming is the sound of a pot when it is boiling the pot, and when a pot is boiling, it has a known sound that everyone who has heard it recognizes. And his saying: from here is for the purpose of specifying the cause, meaning: because of the weeping. It is also permissible that it be explanatory, meaning: it clarifies the cause, but the first meaning is shorter and clearer. Weeping is well known; weeping has causes: sometimes its cause is pain and sadness, and sometimes its cause is the opposite of that: joy, relaxation, and happiness. How many people have laughed when they were given good news, and how many people have wept when they were sad? Is the first or the second more common? The second is more common, that it is from sadness and pain and the like. And the weeping of children is frequent because they cannot express themselves through pain or sadness except in this way. And this way is innate; all the sons of Adam are equal in it, Arabs and non-Arabs alike. Take one of the non-Arabs, one of the Arabs, one of the Berbers, and one of any type, then move them in a way that causes them pain, and they will cry out. Do they differ or not? They do not differ. It is well known because this is a natural, innate matter. The scholars said: And the weeping of a child has a great benefit, especially for the very young ones, the small ones in the cradle. They say: Because when the very young ones are not able to walk on their feet and circulate the blood and open the intestines, Allah the Exalted made this weeping a substitute for exercise with the feet and hands. So it opens the intestines, activates the body, and circulates the blood. As for the small children who are older than that, a person is pained when he hears them weeping; undoubtedly he is pained out of mercy and compassion for them. But is it better to leave them until they are quiet and their souls are soothed from the weeping, or is it better to calm them down? If they sat and cried all night, it would be a hardship. But if, in my view, and knowledge is with Allah, if their weeping is for the sake of seeking revenge, then leave them; their souls will not be soothed except by this. If you tried to silence them, their souls would be upset. And if it was due to pain or the like, then here you should try to silence them by every means.
