Crying During Supplication and During Recitation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on one who cries during supplication but does not cry when hearing the words of Allah the Exalted?

A: This is not by his choice; his heart may be moved during supplication but not by certain verses. However, he should strive to correct himself and be more humble in his recitation than in his supplication, because humility in recitation is more important. If he is humble in both recitation and supplication, that is all good, because humility in supplication is also one of the causes of its being answered. But he should pay more attention to recitation, because it is the word of Allah, containing guidance and light.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would reflect and comprehend, and so would the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction), who would cry when reciting it. For this reason, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) :
Read the Qur'an to meاقرأ علي القرآن
, Abdullah said, "How can I recite to you when it was revealed to you?!" He said:
I like to hear it from another person.إني أُحب أن أسمعه من غيري
Sahih al-Bukhari 5056
, so he recited to him the beginning of Surat al-Nisa until he reached the words of Allah the Exalted:
So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad] against these [people] as a witness?فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ شَهِيدًا
[al-Nisa:41]. He said:
That is enough for youحسبك
, and Ibn Mas'ud said, "So he turned to look at him," or he said, "So I raised my head to him and saw his eyes gushing with tears." Meaning: he was crying.
The apparent meaning is that he was crying without making a sound, and this was known by the presence of tears.
Similarly, the hadith of Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir: that he heard a sound from the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) chest like the bubbling of a cauldron due to crying.
This indicates that a sound may occur, but it is not disturbing.
