The questioner : As for the letter before us now, it has reached us from 'Umar Saleh Muhammad al-Shahri. He states in his letter that some people place a great deal of filth on graves; what is the ruling on that? May Allah guide you?
The Shaykh : The graves of Muslims are respected graves, and it is obligatory for the Muslim to respect them because they are the dwellings of his Muslim brothers, and he does not know when they will also become his dwelling. Indeed, a person does not know on which land he will die, nor does he know when he will die. It is not permissible to throw garbage and dirt on the graves of Muslims, nor between them. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) have mentioned that it is forbidden for a person to urinate or defecate on the graves of Muslims, or to do so between the graves, even if it is not on the grave itself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, in what is established from him from the hadith of Abu Mufad al-Ghunawi (may Allah be pleased with him)Sunan an-Nasa'i 760Sahih (Darussalam) If this prohibition is established regarding sitting on them, how much more so is it regarding throwing filth, dung, and other things that the soul abhors on the graves of Muslims and between the graves of Muslims.
