Continuation of the benefits of His saying, the Exalted: << فكلا أخذنا بذنبه فمنهم من أرسلنا عليه حاصبا . . . . . . . . . >

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
... and that the attributes of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) are divided into two categories: affirmative and negative. The affirmative are those that Allah has affirmed for Himself, and they are nothing but attributes of perfection. The negative are those that Allah has denied of Himself, and they are nothing but attributes of deficiency. They revolve around two things: the negative attributes revolve around two things: one is deficiency, and the other is resembling the created beings. If we were to say that resembling the created beings is a deficiency and we confined these two things to a single thing, that would not be far off, for resembling the deficient is considered a deficiency.
It is derived from the end of the verse, in His saying:
but they were [only] wronging themselves. ولكن كانوا أنفسهم يظلمون
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
, that the disobedient person is one who wrongs himself. The point is that the self is a trust with you; just as you are prohibited from diminishing it physically, you are prohibited from diminishing it conceptually. This means that if a person were to intend to cut off his hand or finger, or to harm his body, that would be forbidden. For this reason, the one who kills himself with something will be tormented in Hell with that same thing, eternally. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) equated the one who kills himself with the one who kills another in terms of eternal abode in the Fire and torment with the means of killing. Accordingly, we say that everyone who disobeys Allah is one who wrongs himself. From this, we understand the meaning of His saying:
And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself ومن يرغَبُ عن ملَّةِ إبراهيم إلا مَن سَفِهَ نفسَه
[Al-Baqarah 2:130]
, and that deviating from the religion of Ibrahim is foolishness, because it is a wronging of the self in a way that the person does not realize.
