The questioner : I hope you will provide information on the permissibility of eating imported chicken from France, as I found the lower jaw still attached to the chicken and not cut off. Is it lawful or forbidden?

The Shaykh : As for the chicken you found where a part of its head was not cut off, and the cutting was done at the top of the head, then this is not lawful. However, it is not necessary that this ruling applies to all the chicken that comes with it. Regarding these imported meats from non-Islamic countries, whether chicken or other things whose eating is lawful, we see that they are permissible to eat and there is no harm in eating them. But given the extensive discussion and talk about them, we see that avoiding them is better, and that a person should be content with what has no doubt in it rather than what has doubt. As for forbidding it, that is not the case, for it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from what the Jews slaughtered, as in the case of the sheep that was gifted to him in Khaybar. Also, a Jewish boy invited him while he was in Madinah and served him a thick soup, and the thick soup, the scholars said, is rancid fat. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it, and he did not ask the Jewish woman who gifted him the sheep how she slaughtered it, or whether she invoked the name of Allah over it or not. So whatever is slaughtered by one whose slaughter is lawful, whether a Muslim, a Jew, or a Christian, it is eaten, and one is not asked how it was slaughtered, or whether the name of Allah was invoked over it or not. In Sahih al-Bukhari, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said:
A group of people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, our people bring us meat, and we do not know whether they invoked the name of Allah over it or not? He said (peace and blessings be upon him): Invoke the name yourselves and eat.
She said: "And they were recently converted from disbelief". This indicates that if a person is served meat from one whose slaughter is lawful for him to eat, he eats it and does not investigate how it was slaughtered, or whether the name of Allah was invoked over it or not. This is what the Sunnah requires.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : But as I said a moment ago, given the extensive discussion about what comes from those non-Islamic countries, if one is scrupulous and avoids it in favor of something else, that is better. And we do not forbid this imported meat.

The questioner : Yes.
