The questioner : He says that some people, may Allah guide them and us, when they come to the prayer and stand in a row to pray with the congregation, they recite the prayer aloud, the al-Fatihah, the prostrations, and the bowings, and this disturbs the person next to them. Is this permissible or not? Please give us a ruling. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for the ma'mum (one praying behind the imam) to recite aloud, nor to say the tasbih (glorifications), nor to make du'a' (supplication) in a way that disturbs those around him. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to his Companions one day while they were reciting and raising their voices, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not raise your voices over one another in the Qur'an, or he said: in the recitation. لا يجهر بعضكم على بعض في القرأن، أو قال: في القراءة
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 59:118
And because this causes harm to his fellow worshippers. And Allah the Exalted said:
And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.
[Al-Ahzab 33:58]
And because this man would not be pleased if someone else did it with him.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If he is not pleased with it for himself, how can he be pleased with it for others? And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself. لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
By these three pieces of evidence, it becomes clear that it is not permissible for the ma'mum to raise his voice in a way that disturbs the worshippers around him, neither in recitation, nor in tasbih, nor in du'a'.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
