What is the meaning of Allah’s statement regarding the people of deviation: “...and seeking its figurative interpretation”?

The scholars said: The meaning of ta'wil (figurative interpretation) is interpretation contrary to what Allah intended. That is, they interpret it in a way other than what Allah intended, whether people are led astray by it or not. It leads to doubts in their own hearts; they themselves also become doubtful about this. The meaning is known and must be understood; it cannot be interpreted except in this sense. I mean the interpretation that only Allah knows. They speak about what only Allah knows: we do not say anything about it; we hold back from it. Otherwise, yes, if they interpret it other than what Allah intended, no. Rather, they follow the ambiguous verses in order to tell people, “Look, the Qur'an is contradictory,” or they bring verses whose meaning is not clear and then interpret them as they wish.
