The questioner : She says: I have passed the forty days, and the discharge did not stop as is customary for post-natal bleeding, but it increased after the forty days and became like the normal menstrual flow. So some of the elderly women, who are older than me and more knowledgeable in these matters, told me that it is a sister of post-natal bleeding. So should I pray or not? May Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : The blood that occurs due to childbirth is post-natal bleeding, and there is no limit to its maximum or minimum duration. Therefore, when the woman becomes pure, even if it is only one day or a few days after delivery, she is considered pure, and it is obligatory for her to pray, her fasting is valid, and it is permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her. Likewise, if the blood continues with her until it exceeds forty days, it is considered post-natal bleeding. Some scholars hold that what exceeds forty days is not post-natal bleeding; rather, if it coincides with her custom, it is menstruation, and if it does not coincide with her custom, it is not menstruation until it recurs three times, after which it is ruled to be menstruation. However, I do not know of any evidence for this distinction. As long as the blood has not changed and remains post-natal bleeding, she remains in that state, even if it exceeds forty days, until she becomes pure.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, if the blood continues with her for a long period, she then takes a full ritual bath and prays. If her custom comes to her on the days of menstruation, or if the days of her menstrual custom come to her, she sits for the duration of the days of menstruation.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : But she continues without praying until the blood stops?

The Shaykh : Until the blood stops, unless it is confirmed definitively, do you know that... it stops either by a doctor examining it or through practices and experiences.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : This is a message we received from A. Abd al-Rahman from Riyadh.
