Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] even though in another verse Allah affirms this description for them, such as His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Hajj 22:17] where He affirms this description for them. But here He said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] and its benefit is establishing the argument against them, as they claim to be Christians and to be the people of victory by truth, and yet they forgot a share of what they were reminded of. [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] If Allah took the covenant from the Jews and Allah took the covenant from the Christians, and likewise from this Ummah, then Allah the Exalted took the covenant from it, as He said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:7] And Allah took the covenant from all of the children of Adam that they would believe in Him and in His messengers, and that they would make Him unique and not associate anything with Him. Allah took the covenant from the Christians who said, "We are Christians," [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] "They forgot" means they left it, and this is practical forgetting. Is it possible for it to be intellectual forgetting? It is not possible. If we say that the Children of Israel are exempt from being held accountable for forgetting, meaning if they are exempt from being held accountable, then they are not punished. But if we say that the exemption from being held accountable for forgetting is specific to this Ummah, we say that His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] encompasses intellectual forgetting and practical forgetting. There is no doubt that practical forgetting is more severe than intellectual forgetting, even according to the view that they are held accountable for intellectual forgetting. And His saying: means a share; they forgot a share of what they were reminded of. [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] Allah the Exalted did not mention for these Christians what He mentioned for the Jews, because He mentioned for the Jews that He cursed them, made their hearts hard, and afflicted them with distorting the words from their places, and they forgot a share of what they were reminded of. As for these, He says: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14]. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] Enmity is in speech and action, and hatred is in the heart, meaning there is no loyalty between them and no affection, but rather enmity, which is the opposite of loyalty, and hatred, which is the opposite of affection. [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] up to this day of ours. So the Christians are differing, hostile, declaring some of them misguided and some of them disbelievers. If someone says: We now find that the Christians are in agreement? We say this agreement is apparent, otherwise in their hearts is hatred for one another that no one knows except Allah. Then what are they in agreement on? On a third enemy, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:51] So they are in agreement on a third enemy, otherwise they are differing among themselves, their hearts are discordant, and there are apparent aggressions. And His saying: We say the enmity and hatred between the Christians and their sects is undoubtedly present, because the news of Allah is truth, and He said: But what we observe of their apparent agreement is contrary to what is in the hidden. Then, as I told you, their apparent agreement now is against what? Against an enemy for everyone, and this is not strange in matters of the world and its politics. He said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14]. On the Day of Resurrection, it was passed to us that it is the day on which people are resurrected, and it was named that day for three reasons: first, that people stand up in it from their graves to the Lord of the Worlds; second, that the witnesses are established in it; and third, that justice is established in it. [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] "Sawfa" is for realization, but it indicates delay, and its sister "Sina" is for realization, but it indicates immediacy. That is, if you say, "Sina qama Zayd," the meaning is that he stands up now. And if you say, "Sawfa qama?" it is in the future. But both indicate realization and that the matter is certain and must occur. [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] meaning, He informs them of what they used to do, and His informing them, Blessed and Exalted is He, is a threat that if He informs them of what they did, then after that is only the recompense for what they deserve. And His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:14] meaning, by what they used to do of forgetting the share of what they were reminded of.
