He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ فَلَنْ أَكُونَ ظَهِيرًا لِلْمُجْرِمِينَ
[Surah al-Qasas: 17] As we passed over this verse yesterday, some scholars say it is a supplication, while others say it is a statement of fact implying a commitment. If it is said to be a supplication, then it is derived from the verse that seeking nearness to Allah through His blessings is permissible, because His saying:
By what You have bestowed
بما أنعمت
means "by reason of Your blessing upon me." And if it is said to be a commitment, then it indicates gratitude for blessings, and that if Allah bestows a blessing upon a person, it is obligatory that he not be an aid to the criminals with that blessing. And we said that the second meaning is closer and stronger, because it is the apparent meaning of the verse, and one should not deviate from its apparent meaning, yes, and even if it allows for the second meaning.
