The reader: And blessings and peace be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions
As for what follows, the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim* "And as for most of our companions, they understood from Ahmad's words that one should act upon the hadith and apply it to fasting on a single day, for he was asked about the specific ruling, so he answered with the hadith, and his answer with the hadith implies following it. And what he mentioned regarding Yahya is merely an explanation of the ambiguity that occurred in it. These scholars dislike fasting on a single day, acting upon this hadith because of the strength of its chain of narration, and that is a reason for acting upon it. They applied it to fasting on a single day, such as fasting on Friday or in the month of Rajab
And Ahmad narrated in the Musnad from the hadith of Ibn Lahi'ah, who said: Musa ibn Wardan narrated to us, from 'Ubayd al-A'raj, who said: My grandmother—meaning al-Sama'—told me that she entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a Saturday while he was eating lunch, and he said
Come, eat lunch. She said: I am fasting. He said to her: Did you fast yesterday? She said: No. He said: Eat, for fasting on Saturday is neither for you nor against you. تعالي تغذي فقالت إني صائمة فقال لها أصمت أمس فقالت لا قال كلي فإن صيام يوم السبت لا لك ولا عليك
And although this hadith has a weak chain of narration, the other hadiths indicate its meaning "
