The questioner : He says in his letter: I am a man suffering from a severe illness that affects my brain. In crowds and gatherings, when this illness strikes me, I fall to the ground and lose awareness of where I am. This illness only strikes me during prayer. Is it permissible for me to leave the prayer in the mosque because of this illness, and instead pray at home alone? May Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : Yes, we say yes. It is permissible for you to leave the congregational prayer and pray in your home, given that attending the congregation leads to this illness which affects you. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
So fear Allah as much as you are able فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
And He, the Exalted, said:
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
And He, the Exalted, said:
has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty مَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The religion is easy الدين يسر
So as long as you are in the condition you described to us, it is not obligatory for you to attend the congregation. We ask Allah to cure you of what has befallen you.
