The ruling on one who left the prayer due to an illness that afflicted him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener who identified himself as: The poor servant of Allah, Muhammad Muhammad Abdullah al-Masri. He works in Iraq. When he wrote the letter, he said: I work in Iraq, and I suffered an injury in my foot from work, which resulted in a surgical procedure, followed by physical therapy. This took a period of four months, during which I stopped praying. I should note that before this, praise be to Allah, I was consistent in my prayer, and now, praise be to Allah, I am diligent in it. Is it obligatory for me to make up this prayer, or is it considered a valid legal excuse?

Answer:
If you left the prayer believing that this was an excuse and that you owed nothing because of this illness, then you must make up the missed prayers. But if you were lax and deliberately left the prayer out of indifference, then you must repent to Allah and return to Him, and on the correct view, you do not have to make up the missed prayers; rather, you must repent to Allah, because leaving the prayer is disbelief, and a disbeliever is only required to repent. Whoever leaves the prayer deliberately commits disbelief, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for themقُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ يَنتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُمْ مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ
[Al-Anfal: 38], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل، وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة، فمن تركها؛ فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So if you deliberately left it, being lax, then it is obligatory for you to repent to Allah, to feel remorse, and to resolve not to return to it, and there is no making up of the prayer for you according to the correct view.
As for if you thought that you were excused, and that with this illness you were not required to do it, then you are like one who forgot it or slept through it; you make it up. You make it up, and you owe nothing. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good. Perhaps he believed he was excused, Your Eminence?

The Shaykh : Perhaps, perhaps.

The presenter : Perhaps he believed.

The Shaykh : Perhaps, if Allah wills. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
