The reader: "It is mentioned that the grave of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari is with the people of Constantinople, and likewise, but they are not to be followed. For there were many graves of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the cities, and with them were the Tabi'un and after them the imams. They never called for aid at the grave of a companion, nor did they ask for rain at his grave or through it, nor did they seek help at it or through it. It is known that such a matter is one for which the wills and motivations are eager to transmit, indeed to transmit what is less than it. Whoever reflects on the books of traditions and knows the state of the Salaf will be certain that the people did not call for aid at the graves".
The Shaykh : Allah is the Greatest.
The reader: "Nor did they specifically seek supplication at them at all. Rather, they forbade it for those among the ignorant who did it, as we have mentioned some of this.
So it is either that supplication at them is better than supplication in other places, or it is not. If it is better, it is not permissible for the knowledge of this to be hidden from the Companions, the Tabi'un, and those who followed them; so that the three excellent generations would be ignorant of this great virtue, while those after them know it. And it is not permissible for them to know the great virtue in it and be indifferent to it, while they are eager for every good, especially supplication, for the desperate person clings to every means, even if there is a type of dislike in it. How could they be desperate in much of their supplication, knowing the virtue of supplication at the graves, and yet not intend it? This is impossible by nature and by the Shari'ah".
The Shaykh : And this which the author (may Allah have mercy on him) said is clear, because the Companions and the righteous Salaf are either ignorant of this matter, meaning this virtue, and those after them know it, and this is impossible. How could the Salaf be ignorant and the Khalaf know?
Or they are knowledgeable but indifferent to this virtue, and this is also impossible, because we know from the Salaf, the Companions and the Tabi'un, that they were the most eager people to do good. So it is impossible that they know that supplication at the graves is better and closer to being answered, and yet they do not do it.
This is a clear analysis and division. Yes.
The reader: "And if supplication at them is not better, then intending supplication at them is misguidance and sin, just as if one specifically sought and intended supplication at all the places where".
The Shaykh : The places.
The reader: Yes "just as if one specifically sought and intended supplication at all the places where there is no virtue in supplication, such as the banks of rivers, the plantations of trees, the shops of the markets, the sides of the roads, and what no one can count except Allah".
