Reading from the author's words, with commentary on them and collation of the manuscripts: "The phrase 'tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) through a person, and turning to him, and asking through him'

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "The phrase 'tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) through a person, and turning to him, and asking through him, contains ambiguity and polysemy, and because of this, those who did not understand the intent of the Companions made a mistake' It is not clear to me, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Which one?
The reader: It is intended, or it is intended

The Shaykh : Yes?
The reader: It is not clear, there is obscurity in it.

The Shaykh :"And asking through him", "The phrase 'tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means)'" Read it.
The reader: "The phrase 'tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) through a person, and turning to him, and asking through him, contains ambiguity and polysemy'

The Shaykh : Is it a condition or polysemy?
The reader: Polysemy.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The reader: "And polysemy, and because of this, those who did not understand the intent of the Companions made a mistake" The word after that, the word after that is not clear.

The Shaykh : It is intended by it, it is intended by it
The reader: "It is intended to mean making him a means, because he is a supplicant and an intercessor, for example, or because the one being supplicated to is responsive to him, obedient to his command, and following his example. Thus, the means is either for the asker's love of him and following him, or through the tawassul's supplication and intercession. It is also intended to mean swearing by him and tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) by his essence, so that the tawassul is not for anything of his, nor for anything of the asker, but by his essence, or merely by swearing by him to Allah. This second one is what they disliked and forbade. Likewise, the phrase 'asking through something' may be intended to mean the first meaning, which is making it a means because it is a cause for obtaining the desired thing, or it may be intended to mean swearing.
From the first category is the hadith of the three men who took refuge in a cave, which is a famous hadith in the two Sahihs and others
For the rock closed over them, and they said: Let each of you call upon Allah with his best deed. One of them said: O Allah, I had a cousin whom I loved as strongly as men love women, and she asked me for one hundred dinars. When I brought them to her, she said: O servant of Allah, fear Allah and do not break the seal except with its right. So I left the gold and turned away. If I did that seeking Your face, then open a way for us. So it opened for them a gap through which they saw the sky. The second said: O Allah, I had two old parents,
"

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) abbreviated the hadith in a way that he should not have done, because in the hadith
that he had tried to seduce her into immorality but she refused, and that need had befallen her so she came to him, and because of the need she agreed with him, then when he sat with her in the position of a man with his wife, she said to him: Fear Allah and do not break the seal except with its right. أنه راودها عن نفسها فأبت، وأنها ألمت بها الحاجة فجاءت إليه، ومن أجل الحاجة وافقته، ثم لما جلس منها مجلس الرجل من امرأته، قالت له اتق الله ولا تفض الخاتم إلا بحقه
and the author's (may Allah have mercy on him) narration left out the word what? That he was a guardian over himself, and it is important in the hadith. The scholars of terminology have mentioned that it is not permissible to delete from a hadith what is needed, except if this phrase is in something other than the phrases of the two Sahihs that we know, then Allah knows best. Yes.
The reader: "
So, one of them said, 'O Allah! I had old parents and I never provided my family (wife, children etc.) with milk before them. One day, by chance I was delayed, and I came late (at night) while they had slept. I milked the sheep for them and took the milk to them, but I found them sleeping. I disliked to provide my family with the milk before them. I waited for them and the bowl of milk was in my hand and I kept on waiting for them to get up till the day dawned. وقال الآخر : اللهم إنه كان لي شيخان كبيران وكنت لا أغبق قبلهما أهلا ولا مالاً، فناء بي طلب الشجر يوما، فلم أرح عليهما حتى ناما، فحلبت لهما غبوقهما فوجدتهما نائمين، فكرهت أن أغبق قبلهما أهلا أو مالاً، فلبثت والقدح على يدي، أنتظر استيقاظهما حتى برق الفجر "
Sahih al-Bukhari 2272
.

The Shaykh : Allah is the Greatest.
The reader: "
So they woke up and drank their evening milk. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your face, then open for us what we are in of this rock. So the rock opened, but they could not get out of it. The third said: O Allah, I hired workers and paid them their wages, except for one man. فاستيقظا فشربا غبوقهما، اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك ففرج عنا ما نحن فيه من هذه الصخرة، فانفرجت الصخرة غير أنهم لا يستطيعون الخروج منها، وقال الثالث : اللهم إني استأجرت أجراء فأعطيتهم أجرهم، غير رجل واحد
"
.

The Shaykh : His saying:
I never gave the evening milk to any family member or slave before them. لا أغبق أهلا ولا مالاً
The household is known, and the wealth is the slaves, the male slaves, meaning he had a household and he had slaves, but he did not give anyone the milk before his parents. Yes.
The reader:
I paid them their wages with the exception of one man فأعطيتهم أجرهم غير رجل واحد
Sahih al-Bukhari 2272
.

The Shaykh : And the third said.
The reader: "
Then the third man said, 'O Allah! I employed few laborers and I paid them their wages with the exception of one man who did not take his wages and went away. I invested his wages and I got much property thereby. (Then after some time) he came and said to me: O Allah's slave! Pay me my wages. I said to him: All the camels, cows, sheep and slaves you see, are yours. He said: O Allah's slave! Don't mock at me. I said: I am not mocking at you. وقال الثالث : اللهم إني استأجرت أجراء فأعطيتهم أجرهم غير رجل واحد ترك الذي له وذهب، فثمرت أجره، حتى كثرت منها الأموال، فجاءني بعد حين فقال: يا عبد الله، أد لي أجري، فقلت له : كل ما ترى من أجرك، من الإبل والبقر والغنم والرقيق. فقال يا عبد الله، لا تستهزئُ بي، فقلت: إني لا أستهزئ بك
Sahih al-Bukhari 2272
"
.

The Shaykh : Is "do not mock" with a dammah in your copy?
The reader: "
He said: O Allah's slave! Don't mock at me. I said: I am not mocking at you. So, he took all the herd and drove them away and left nothing. O Allah! If I did that for Your Sake only, please relieve us from the present suffering.' So, that rock shifted completely and they got out walking. فقال يا عبد الله لا تستهزئْ بي فقلت إني لا أستهزئ بك، فأخذه كله فاستاقه فلم يترك منه شيئاً، اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فافرج عنا ما نحن فيه، فانفرجت الصخرة، فخرجوا يمشون
Sahih al-Bukhari 2272
.
These men supplicated to Allah the Exalted with righteous deeds, because righteous deeds are the greatest means by which a servant seeks nearness to Allah the Exalted, turns to Him, and asks Him, because He promised to respond to those who believed and did righteous deeds and to increase them from His bounty:
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." وقال ربكم ادعوني أستجب لكم
[Ghafir 40:60]
, and these men supplicated to Him by worshipping Him and doing what He commanded of righteous deeds, asking Him, and being humble before Him.
From this is what is reported of al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad "
.

The Shaykh : And from this is what is reported.
The reader: "And from this is what is reported of al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad, that he was afflicted with difficulty in urination, and he said: 'By my love for You, except that You open the way for me'"

The Shaykh : In my copy it is: By my love for You.
The reader: He pointed to it.

The Shaykh : Okay, proceed.
The reader: "By my love for You, except that You open the way for me, so He opened the way for him".

The Shaykh : This is tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) with what? It is tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) with his love for Allah the Exalted, that Allah the Exalted would open the way for him, so He (Glorified and Exalted is He) opened the way for him.
The reader: "Likewise, the supplication of the emigrating woman whose son Allah brought back to life when she said: 'O Allah, I have believed in You and in Your Messenger, and I emigrated in Your cause,' and she asked Allah to bring her child back to life, and similar to that.
And this is as the believers said:
(193) Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous. (194) Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise." ربنا إننا سمعنا مناديًا ينادي للإيمان أن آمنوا بربكم فآمنا ربنا فاغفر لنا ذنوبنا وكفر عنا سيئاتنا وتوفنا مع الأبرار. ربنا وآتنا ما وعدتنا على رسلك ولا تخزنا يوم القيامة إنك لا تخلف الميعاد
[Ali 'Imran 3:193-194]
.

The Shaykh : The remainder of the witness from the verse, they sought nearness, so they said to Allah the Exalted:
So He responded to them. فاستجاب لهم
. Yes.
The reader: "
So asking Allah and seeking nearness to Him by fulfilling His command, avoiding His prohibition, doing what He loves, and servitude and obedience is of the same kind as doing that hoping for Allah's mercy and fearing His punishment"

The Shaykh : But that is enough, it ended, did it not end?
