Also, he asks: What is the meaning of the prayer of tasbih, is it obligatory for every Muslim, and how do we perform it?

The questioner : Also, he asks: What is the meaning of the prayer of tasabih, is it obligatory for every Muslim, and how do we perform it?

The Shaykh : The prayer of tasbih is not authentic. In fact, the Shaykh al-Islam said: "It is a fabricated hadith", and Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is a hadith that is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)". Accordingly, it is not prescribed, because the establishment of its prescription is based on the authenticity of its hadith.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If it is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then it is not permissible for us to worship Allah with it. Furthermore, its description, its action, and its performance make it unlikely to be prescribed or to have come from the wellspring of prophethood. It states that it is to be prayed every day; if not, then every week; if not, then every month; if not, then every year; if not, then once in a lifetime.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The Shari'ah does not bring forth anything like this, where a worship is prescribed in this manner. For acts of worship are either for the rectification of the heart at all times, in which case they are prescribed at all times; or they are for the rectification of the heart in a general sense, and imposing them on people would be a hardship, like Hajj, in which case they are made obligatory once. As for prescribing it in this manner, there is no precedent for it in the Shari'ah. Therefore, it is invalid in its chain and in its reasoning, meaning in its effect and in its reasoning.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : A person should not worship Allah with it.
