Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: " And to this Allah the Exalted points in His saying:
(22) No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy - (23) In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful - ما أصاب من مصيبة في الأرض ولا في أنفسكم إلا في كتاب من قبل أن نبرأها إن ذلك على الله يسير * لكيلا تأسوا على ما فاتكم ولا تفرحوا بما ءاتاكم والله لا يحب كل مختال فخور
[Al-Hadid 57:22-23]
"
.
No disaster strikes ما أصاب من مصيبة
[Al-Hadid 57:22]
What is the grammatical parsing of *musibah* (disaster)? Parse it for us?
The student : Is it in the genitive case, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Hm?
The student : It is a noun in the genitive case.

The Shaykh : Say it.
The student : *Min* is a preposition, and *musibah* is a noun in the genitive case.

The Shaykh : In the genitive case by what?
The student : By the kasrah (short vowel).

The Shaykh : No, in the genitive case by what is the word that governs it?
The student : The governing word?

The Shaykh : The kasrah is a sign, it is not the preposition. In the genitive case by what? In the genitive case by the lam (letter).
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, by the lam, and where is the lam?
The student : In the genitive case by what, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : In the genitive case by what, and what is the sign of its genitive case?
The student : The kasrah.

The Shaykh : Is the kasrah apparent or implied?
The student : Apparent, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Apparent.
No disaster strikes ما أصاب من مصيبةٍ
[Al-Hadid 57:22]
. Do you agree with this parsing?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : You do not agree.
The student : O Shaykh, *musibah* is a subject in the nominative case.

The Shaykh : And whom?
The student: It is extra.

The Shaykh : It is an extra preposition. Good. And *musibah*?
The student : It is a subject in the nominative case with an implied dammah (short vowel), the appearance of which was prevented by the position being occupied by the movement of the extra preposition.

The Shaykh : Correct?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, we say *min* is an extra preposition, an extra one.
