The questioner : He says: If a merchant buys fruit from a farmer before it is harvested for eighty riyals per unit by which it is sold, whether that is the kilogram, the mudd, or the like, knowing that its value after harvest is one hundred riyals, is this sale permissible?

The Shaykh : If the grain has hardened and ripened, it is permissible to sell it because the risk is gone at that point. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling grain until it hardens. If he sells it, there is no harm in selling it by estimate, meaning, for example, each sa' for a certain amount, or selling it in bulk by approximation, by selling this piece of cultivated land or this crop on this piece of land for a certain amount. If he sells it for a price, even if it would be sold for more if it were cleaned and then sold in the market, there is no harm in that.

The questioner : Yes.
