The questioner : Does a person receive reward for reading the Qur'an even if he does not understand its meanings?
The Shaykh : The Noble Qur'an is blessed, as Allah the Exalted said:[Sad 38:29] Therefore, a person is rewarded for reading it whether he understands its meaning or not. However, it is not befitting for a believer to read the Qur'an, which obligates him to act upon it, without understanding its meaning. If a person, for example, wanted to learn medicine and studied medical books, he would not be able to benefit from them until he understood their meaning and it was explained to him; rather, he would strive with all his might to understand their meaning in order to apply it. How much more so with the Book of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), which is a healing for what is in the chests and a lesson for people, that a person should read it without reflection and without understanding its meaning? For this reason, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not move on from ten verses until they learned them, along with the knowledge and action contained therein. They learned the Qur'an, the knowledge, and the action all together. A person is rewarded and given reward for reading the Qur'an whether he understands its meaning or not, but he should strive with all his might to understand its meaning and to receive this understanding from scholars who are trustworthy in their knowledge and their trustworthiness. If he does not find a scholar who can explain the meaning to him, let him refer to trustworthy books of tafsir, such as the tafsir of Ibn Jarir and the tafsir of Ibn Kathir, and other tafsirs that focus on the traditional tafsir narrated from the Companions and the Tabi'un (may Allah be pleased with them).
