Explanation of the Book of Sales-18

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he said: "And from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the sale of fruits till they become colorful. He was asked what that meant, he replied, "Till they become reddish and yellowish." أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن بيع الثمار حتى تزهى . قيل : وما زهوها ؟ قال : تحمارُّ وتصفار
Bulugh al-Maram 7:86
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
:
This hadith is like the one before it: the prohibition of selling fruits
He was asked what that meant, he replied, "Till they become reddish and yellowish." قيل : وما زهوها ؟ قال : تحمار وتصفار
Bulugh al-Maram 7:86
: except that this hadith suggests that the fruits meant are date fruits, because they are the ones that turn red or yellow.
And his saying:
They ripen تزهى
: or they ripen, from the word *izha'*, which means goodness. *Zaha yazha'u* means it became good and delicious. But he was asked:
He was asked what that meant, he replied, "Till they become reddish and yellowish." ما زهوها ؟ قال : تحمار أو تصفار
Bulugh al-Maram 7:86
so he referred to the color, because the color is evidence of ripeness. The color is evidence of ripeness. If we said that ripeness and taste, a person would need to eat before selling to see if it has taste or not, but the color is sufficient.
And his saying:
They turn red and yellow تحمار وتصفار
do you have it or not, and they turn yellow? And *tusafrar* is undoubtedly an addition in this verb. It seems its original form was *tahmar* and *tasafrar*, and the alif was added. Does this addition here indicate exaggeration, and that the meaning is they turn red with a distinct redness and turn yellow with a distinct yellowness? Or does this alif indicate approximation?
Meaning they turn red: the redness appears in them, even if it is not distinct, like when we say: reddish. This cloth is reddish, this cloth is yellowish, this is less than saying: this cloth is red or clearly yellow? There are two opinions among the explainers: one opinion that the meaning is they turn red, i.e., they reach the peak of redness, and they turn yellow likewise, because the addition in the structure usually indicates an addition in the meaning. And an opinion that this *tafa'ala* form indicates what? Approximation rather than perfection, meaning until they approach the perfection of redness and yellowness. So according to the first opinion, we wait until the color is completely clear, and according to the second, as soon as it leans toward redness and it is clear that it is of the red type, that is sufficient. So whoever is cautious and says: I will delay until the redness is completely clear, that is better. And whoever takes the concession and says: the beginning of redness is evidence of the beginning of ripeness or the beginning of goodness, he is satisfied with that.
