Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-09a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Muhammad ibn Ghurayr al-Zuhri narrated to me, saying: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me from Salih from Ibn Shihab, who told him that 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah informed him
From Ibn 'Abbas that he and al-Harith ibn Qays ibn Hasan al-Fazari had a debate regarding the companion of Musa. Ibn 'Abbas said, "It is Khidr." Then Abu' al-'Abbas passed by them, and Ibn 'Abbas called him and said, "I debated with this companion of mine regarding the companion of Musa, the one to whom Musa asked for the way to meet him. Have you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention his affair?" He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: While Musa was with a group of the Children of Israel, a man came to him and said, 'Do you know anyone more knowledgeable than you?' Musa said, 'No.' So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to Musa: 'Yes, our servant Khidr.' So Musa asked for the way to him, and Allah made the fish a sign for him, and it was said to him, when
, when you lose it, O Shaykh

The Shaykh : You lost it
The reader: In our copy, the qaf is with a kasrah

The Shaykh : You lost it
And it was said to him, when: you lose the fish, return, for you will meet him. He was following the trail of the fish in the sea. Then his young man said to Musa, "Did you see when we took shelter at the rock? I forgot the fish, and nothing made me forget it except Satan, that I should mention it." He said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned on their tracks step by step, and they found Khidr. And so it was with their affair that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, related in His Book.

The Shaykh : He said: "Chapter on what is mentioned regarding Musa's (peace be upon him) journey in the sea to Khidr" And the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
Shall I follow youهل أتبعك
The one saying this is Musa, offering to Khidr to follow him. The question here is a question of request and hope, and that is because Allah, the Exalted, informed Musa that there is someone more knowledgeable than you, and he is our servant Khidr. So he sought him until Allah made this sign for him. When he reached it, meaning he connected with him, and what happened between them is what Allah, the Exalted, related in Surat al-Kahf. The story is well-known, and the point from this is that there is no harm in a scholar seeking knowledge from one who is below him in rank, because no one is complete in knowledge, and even if you know some things, other things are hidden from you.
And in it is also that there is no blame on a person for asking for knowledge from one who is below him in rank. This is different from the first point. The first point indicates that the person of lower rank may have what the person of higher rank does not have. As for this, the meaning is that the person of higher rank asks the person of lower rank.
And His saying:
That you teach me from what you have been taught with wisdom على أن تعلمني مما علمت رشدا
In this is also an indication that the knowledge with Khidr is from what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, taught him. The scholars differed regarding Khidr: is he a prophet or a righteous man? Is he existing or non-existent? And what appears to me is that he is not a prophet, and that he ceased to exist in his time like other people, and that he was not existing. The strange thing is that some of the distinguished scholars hold that he is existing, and perhaps he returns the greeting while he is in a teaching session, and he is asked, "To whom did you return the greeting?" and he says, "Khidr passed by us and greeted us." Even though he is one of the distinguished scholars, but, Glory be to Allah, when a person believes something, he imagines it. Otherwise, how can Khidr be human and not be seen, and how can he travel through all the lands? On what does he fly? What carries him? The correct view is that Khidr is not a prophet, but Allah inspired him and showed him things that were not with Musa, and that he died in his time, in his era, with the people. Yes.
