Commentary on al-Jalalain’s Tafsir: “Indeed, those who disbelieved will be called out” by the angels while they hate themselves upon entering the Fire, “for the hatred of Allah” for you is “greater than your hatred of yourselves when you were called” in this world “to faith, but you disbelieved.”

The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allah for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves إن الذين كفروا ينادون لمقت الله أكبر من مقتكم أنفسكم
[Ghafir 40:10]
“Indeed, those who disbelieved will be called out.” The call is speech from a distance, and intimate conversation is speech from near. Allah the Exalted did not specify who calls out to them, but the commentator said: “by the angels”, and this is upon their entry into the Fire. At that time, they hate themselves with the greatest hatred. Hatred is the most intense form of aversion. So, at that time, upon entering the Fire, they hate themselves intensely because they did not attain salvation from it. They are called out, and it is said to them:
The hatred of Allah for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves لمقت الله أكبر من مقتكم أنفسكم
[Ghafir 40:10]
The lam here is the lam of inception, and it enters the subject for emphasis.
And His saying: “
for the hatred of Allah لمقت الله
for you”
is one of the two interpretations of the verse. On this view, the hatred is attributed to its doer, not its object, meaning that Allah’s hatred for you is greater than your hatred for yourselves. It was also said that it is attributed to its object, not its doer. On this view, the meaning is: Your hatred of Allah when you were called to faith is greater than your hatred of yourselves today. That is, they disliked what they were called to in this world, which is the love of Allah, and they replaced it with the most intense hatred. This meaning is closer to what the commentator, may Allah have mercy on him, followed, namely “for the hatred of Allah for you.” And according to what we have preferred, the meaning is “for your hatred of Allah,” so it is attributed to its object. When did they hate Allah?
when you were invited to faith إذ تدعون إلى الإيمان
[Ghafir 40:10]
On this view, His saying:
when you are called إذ تدعون
is connected to His saying:
for the hatred of Allah لمقت الله
, meaning: When you were called to faith, you disliked it and were not satisfied with it, but rather you hated it with the most intense hatred. And His saying:
greater than your hatred of yourselves أكبر من مقتكم أنفسكم
[Ghafir 40:10]
When did they hate themselves? When it was said to them, “Enter the Fire of Hell,” so they hated themselves. And His saying:
greater than your hatred of yourselves من مقتكم أنفسكم
[Ghafir 40:10]
The hatred here is a verbal noun attributed to what?
greater than your hatred of yourselves من مقتكم أنفسكم
[Ghafir 40:10]
The hatred here is attributed to its doer, meaning that they themselves hated themselves, and “selves” is the object of hatred. And His saying:
when you were invited to faith, but you refused." إذ تدعون إلى الإيمان فتكفرون
[Ghafir 40:10]
You are called in this world to faith. The caller is left unspecified because their call to faith comes from the messengers and from the heirs of the messengers, who are the scholars. So the one calling them to faith in this world is not one person, but rather the messengers call them, and the heirs of the messengers, who are the scholars, call them as well.
when you were invited to faith, but you refused." إذ تدعون إلى الإيمان فتكفرون
[Ghafir 40:10]
Faith in whom? That is, in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, its good and its evil. This is faith as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it when Jibril asked him, saying:
Inform me about Iman (faith). He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah أخبرني عن الإيمان قال : أن تؤمن بالله
Sahih Muslim 8a
to the end of it.
when you were invited to faith, but you refused." إذ تدعون إلى الإيمان فتكفرون
[Ghafir 40:10]
And the intended meaning of faith here, as I mentioned to you, is faith in the six pillars. And also the submission required by faith in these six pillars. For this reason, they were called to the faith that is in the hearts, and they were called to submission as well, which is the deeds of the limbs, and they disbelieved in all of it, when you are called to faith, but you disbelieve.
