Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “And We certainly gave Moses the Book” the Torah “so they differed over it” by believing in it and denying it, just as with the Qur’an “and if not for a word that had preceded from your Lord”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement.
[Hud 11:110]
When Allah the Exalted mentioned this noble Book and that it is guidance and healing for those who believe, and that for those who do not believe there is deafness in their ears and blindness over them, He clarified what happened to the previous nations regarding their books, saying:
And We did certainly give Moses the Torah
[Al-Baqarah 2:87]
We gave
meaning We gave, {Fill in the blank, this is it, fill it in, man!} This sentence is affirmed by three affirmers: the oath, the lam, and
Perhapsقد
The implied meaning is: By Allah, We have given. This occurs frequently in the noble Book, meaning: such a formulation occurs frequently in the Qur'an. And His saying:
when We gave Moses the Scripture
[Al-Baqarah 2:53]
This giving is a cosmic and legislative giving, for Allah the Exalted actually revealed the Torah to him and gave him the judgment by it. And Musa is the son of Imran, the best of the prophets of the Children of Israel, and he is in the third rank regarding the resolute prophets, because the resolute prophets are five, the best of them being Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), then Ibrahim, then Musa. And His saying:
the Book الكتاب
means the Torah, and Allah the Exalted called it a Book because Allah the Exalted wrote it with His Hand, as He the Exalted said:
And We wrote for him on the tablets [something] of all things - instruction and explanation for all things
[Al-A'raf 7:145]
He said: "
So they differed over it فاختلف فيه
with belief and disbelief, like the Qur'an "
People differed, meaning people differed in it, some of them being believers and some of them being disbelievers, just as people also differed regarding the Qur'an, and so it is with all nations regarding what the messengers brought: some are believers and some are disbelievers. {Ahmad, be quiet, stay with us, do not turn the book over} So people differed in it as well; in all that the messengers brought, people differ between a believer and a disbeliever. And this is consolation for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He said:
And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them
[Yunus 10:19]
Why notلولا
This is a conditional particle, a letter of condition, and it is—as the grammarians said—a letter of existence for existence
If not for a word
This is existent
The judgment would have been carried outلقُضِي
This is non-existent. Yes, a letter of existence for non-existence. And His saying:
a word that preceded from your Lord
[Yunus 10:19]
The commentator says: " By postponing the reckoning and reward for the creatures to the Day of Resurrection " For the complete reward is only on the Day of Resurrection. As for in this world, it is a reward, no doubt, in which the criminals are punished and the believers succeed, but it is not the complete reward in every respect. "
The judgment would have been carried out between them لَقُضِي بينهم
in this world in what they differed in "
And the intended meaning by that is the complete judgment, so this does not contradict what happened to the family of Pharaoh of drowning and destruction when they denied Musa (peace and blessings be upon him). "
And they وإنهم
meaning the disbelievers in it
in disquieting doubt.
[Hud 11:110]
causing doubt
