The ruling on limiting oneself to a single closing salam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A man led us in prayer and said the closing salam only once to his right. Is it permissible to limit oneself to one? And is there anything in the Sunnah regarding this?

A: The majority of the scholars held that a single closing salam is sufficient, because some of the hadiths indicate this. A group of scholars held that two closing salams are necessary, as the hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) establishing this are authentic. And because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayersصلوا كما رأيتموني أصلي
Sahih al-Bukhari 6008
narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih. This is the correct opinion.
The opinion that a single closing salam suffices is weak due to the weakness of the hadiths reported on this matter and their lack of explicitness regarding the requirement. Even if they were authentic, they would be anomalous, as they contradict what is more authentic, more established, and more explicit than them. However, if one does so out of ignorance or believing in the authenticity of the hadiths on this matter, his prayer is valid. And success is from Allah.
