The Difference in Intention Between the Imam and the One Praying Behind Him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother: A. R. N. May Allah keep him safe. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. After that:
I refer to your inquiry, registered with the Department of Scholarly Research and Ifta under number 1114, dated 21/3/1407 AH.
In which you ask about: The ruling if you missed a prayer recited aloud and did not remember it until the time of the midday prayer, and you wanted to make it up, but when you entered the mosque, you found the congregation praying the midday prayer. Etc.? And likewise, if you delayed the midday prayer and found a congregation praying the afternoon prayer?

A: I inform you that the order between the prayers is obligatory, and there is no harm in joining the congregation with the intention of making up the missed prayer. Then, after you finish the missed prayer, you pray the current prayer. As for the missed prayer recited aloud, the matter regarding reciting it aloud when making it up is broad, and it is better to pray it aloud, because making up a prayer mirrors its original performance. May Allah guide everyone to what brings Him pleasure. He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive. And peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
