The traveler, if he is alone, prays with the imam by completing the prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: If you are a traveler and you stay in the city you traveled to for several days, three or four or fewer or more, and you enter the mosque at the time of the midday prayer and pray the midday prayer with the congregation for four units, then you stand alone and pray the afternoon prayer shortened, is my action permissible? And is it permissible for me to pray combined and shortened alone in my home while I am in the middle of a city with many mosques and I hear the call to prayer, on the pretext that I am a traveler?
A: If a traveler intends to reside in a city for more than four days, it is obligatory for him to complete the prayer according to the majority of the scholars. As for if the residence is less than that, shortening is better, and if he completes it, there is no blame on him. But if he is alone, he does not have the right to shorten alone; rather, he must pray with the congregation and complete the prayer, due to the hadiths indicating the obligation of the congregation, and due to what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in Musnad Ahmad and Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the recommended practice for a traveler who prays with the resident imam is that he prays four units, and due to the generality of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:Sahih al-Bukhari 722 agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
