Q: The brother M.M.A. from New York says in his question: If a person misses part of the funeral prayer, does he make it up? And what is the manner of making it up?
A: The recommended practice (sunnah) for one who misses some of the takbirs of the funeral prayer is to make that up; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): And the manner of making it up is: that he considers what he caught as the beginning of his prayer, and what he makes up as the end of it; due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 635 So if he catches the imam at the third takbir, he says the takbir and recites al-Fatihah, and if the imam says the fourth takbir, he says it after him and sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when the imam says the closing salam, the late-joining follower (masbuq) says the takbir and makes a brief supplication for the deceased, then he says the fourth takbir and says the salam. May Allah guide everyone to what He is pleased with.
A: The recommended practice (sunnah) for one who misses some of the takbirs of the funeral prayer is to make that up; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When the prayer is established, walk to it with calmness and composure. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, make up.
إذا أقيمت الصلاة فامشوا إليها وعليكم السكينة والوقار فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فاقضواand pray whatever you get (with the people) and complete the rest which you have missed
فما أدركتمم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
