The Ruling on Zakah on Fruits and Vegetables

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some farms produce various types of fruits and vegetables. Is there zakah on them? And which cultivated items are subject to zakah?

A: There is no zakah on fruits and similar vegetables that are not weighed and not stored, such as watermelon, pomegranate, and the like, except if they are for trade. In that case, one pays zakah on their value after a lunar year has passed, if they reach the nisab, just like other trade goods. Zakah is only obligatory on grains and fruits that are weighed and stored, such as dates, raisins, wheat, barley, and the like. This is due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvestوَآتُواْ حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ
[Al-An'am: 141], and His saying:
And establish prayer and give zakahوَأَقِيمُواْ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتُواْ الزَّكَاةَ
[Al-Baqarah: 43], and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
less than five wasqs of datesليس فيما دون خمسة أوسق من تمر ولا حب صدقة
Sahih Muslim 980
It is agreed upon that it is authentic. This indicates its obligation on grains that are weighed and stored when they reach that amount. Also, the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took zakah from wheat and barley indicates its obligation on similar items. And success is from Allah.
