Zakah is obligatory in grains and fruits that are weighed, stored, and utilized

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Allah the Exalted says in His Noble Book:
give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvestوَآتُواْ حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ
[Surat al-An'am: 141]. Some people cite this verse as evidence that zakah is obligatory in all types of crops, even those with a short growing season, such as radishes, lettuce, carrots, and watercress... and so on? And what is the nisab for gold?

A: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, indicated the time for giving the zakah of grains, which is the day of their harvest. If one harvests them, threshes them, and obtains an amount that reaches the nisab, it is obligatory to pay the zakah. Zakah is an act of worship and is not established by opinion. There is no zakah prescribed for vegetables; rather, zakah was prescribed only for grains and fruits that are weighed, stored, and utilized in the present and for the future. This is where zakah applies. As for fruits that are eaten immediately and are not stored, weighed, or measured, there is no zakah in them, such as watermelon and various fruits, except for grapes, in which zakah is due like dates, if they reach the nisab of five wasqs.
