Zakat on Fruits

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 11924 )
Q: A merchant asked me to write you the following question: He owns a large orchard of apples and some other fruits, and he asks about how to pay the zakat on all these fruits. It is known that the irrigation is done by digging artesian wells. He also invests the proceeds from these assets in other projects before the lunar year (hawl) arrives in some years, and the money remains like this in every yield. He pays off his debts to banks and other creditors. What is the ruling regarding the previous years for which zakat was paid, and what should I do? What is your advice to him? Because he deals extensively with banks and takes from them
interest and gives it out as well. We ask for an answer to all the above details. May Allah reward you. May Allah reward you with good for serving Islam and its people.

A: First: The value of fruits such as apples, pomegranates, oranges, tomatoes, and the like, if you spend their value on your needs or in paying off debts before the lunar year (hawl) has passed over them, then you owe nothing. If the lunar year passes and you have from their value what reaches the nisab (minimum threshold), then you must pay its zakat, which is one-quarter of one-tenth. Second: As for the fruits themselves, you summarized the question about them, but they require detail. If they are from grains such as barley, wheat, rice, corn, and the like, or from grapes and dates, then these fruits are subject to one-half of one-tenth because they are irrigated with effort, as you mentioned, if they reach the nisab, which is five awsuq (a dry measure of about 3 kg), equal to three hundred sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the measure of which is four full, moderate handfuls with both hands. As for bank interest, it is forbidden riba (usury or interest), and it is obligatory to abandon interest-based transactions and repent to Allah from that, while spending the interest obtained in the ways of good to rid oneself of it and complete the repentance.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
