The Sunnah in Reciting the Fajr Prayer on Friday
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: To His Eminence, the Imam, the Scholar, the Muhaddith, the Jurist, the Exegete, the Preacher, the Mufti, the Shaykh of Islam in his era, our father, Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, may Allah prolong his life in obedience to Him, in service of Islam and the Muslims.
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. After that:
There is a question: Some of the ma’mum (those praying behind the imam) object to the imams of the mosques reciting Surat al-Sajdah and Surat al-Insan in the Fajr prayer on Friday, and they demand that Surat al-Sajdah be divided between the two rak’ahs, citing the inability of some elderly people to stand behind the imam. They argue that some mosque imams do divide it. Should we listen to them and divide it, or should we sometimes leave it out, or should we always recite it without dividing it between the two rak’ahs, regardless of the objection? Please issue a ruling, and may Allah reward you.
A: And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings. After that:
It is the Sunnah for the imam to recite Surat al-Sajdah in the first rak’ah and Surat al-Insan in the second rak’ah of the Fajr prayer on Friday, and he should not pay attention to the objections of those who object to this; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite them in the Fajr prayer on Friday, and he was the most merciful of people, the most knowledgeable of people, and the most compassionate toward the weak. If he leaves them out once in a month or two months, so that people know that reciting them is not obligatory and that it is permissible to recite other surahs, there is no harm. May Allah guide everyone to what pleases Him.
