Zakat on Rented Houses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A man has many residences which he rents out, and he saves a large amount of money from them for a full lunar year. Does he owe zakat on this money? When does it become obligatory? And what is the amount he must pay?

A: If a full lunar year passes over the rent from a residence, a shop, or other such monetary income, zakat becomes obligatory on it if it reaches the minimum threshold (nisab). Whatever the lessor spends on his needs before the year is completed, no zakat is due on it.
The obligatory amount is one-fifth of a tenth, by the consensus of the Muslims. The minimum threshold (nisab) for gold is twenty mithqals, which amounts to eleven and three-sevenths of a Saudi or European pound. The minimum threshold (nisab) for silver is one hundred and forty mithqals, which amounts to fifty-six Saudi silver riyals, or the equivalent in paper currency.
