Ruling on Giving Zakah to the Mother
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on paying zakah on money to the mother?
A: Zakah is not paid to the mother, nor to the father, nor to the children. Allah has made it obligatory to distribute zakah to specific categories, as stated in His saying: [Surah al-Tawbah: 60]. These are the categories to which zakah is distributed. As for the mother, the father, the grandparents, the children, and their children, zakah is not distributed to them. It is obligatory for the Muslim to spend on them from his own wealth, not from zakah. Therefore, zakah is distributed to others, while for his parents, children, and wife, it is obligatory to spend on them from his own wealth, not from zakah. And success is from Allah.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah
