Ruling on Giving Zakah to One's Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner, Abu Mazin from the United Arab Emirates, has two questions. The first question states: He is a young man of means, with many properties and other assets. Is it permissible for him to give from his zakah to his father and mother?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
Neither a man nor a woman may give their zakah to their parents or to their children. Rather, it is given to other relatives if they are poor, not under his care, and not dependent on his financial support; in that case, it serves as both charity and maintaining family ties. As for giving it to his parents, or his children, or his daughters' children, he may not do so. On the contrary, it is obligatory for him to spend from his own wealth on them if they are in need. Giving them from the zakah is not allowed. However, if he has a poor brother, or a poor paternal uncle, or a poor maternal uncle, and there is no one in his household who provides for them, there is nothing wrong with giving them from his zakah. Yes.
