The Shaykh : Discussion.
When the Quraysh heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mention al-Rahman, they rejected it, so Allah revealed concerning them
And they disbelieve in al-Rahman. وهم يكفرون بالرحمن
.
It appears that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted this hadith in meaning, and its original source is: When Suhayl ibn 'Amr, whom the Quraysh sent to negotiate with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, agreed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to write the document, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that it be written "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy." He said: "As for al-Rahman, by Allah, I do not know what it is, but write 'In the name of your Lord, O Allah.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write 'In the name of your Lord, O Allah.'" He rejected al-Rahman, not the one named, but the name. He did not reject the one named, the Lord (Mighty and Majestic), whom they acknowledge, but they rejected this name. They said, "We do not know an al-Rahman except the al-Rahman of al-Yamamah." But Allah revealed this verse, "and they disbelieve in al-Rahman," meaning this name among the names of Allah the Exalted. And Allah the Sublime and Exalted said
Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." قل ادعوا الله أو ادعوا الرحمن أيا ما تدعوا فله الأسماء الحسنى
[Al-Isra 17:110]
, meaning by whatever name of His you call, for He has the best names; all His names are good: Allah, al-Rahman, al-Rahim, al-Malik, al-Quddus, al-Jabbar, al-Mutakabbir, and other names, all of which are good. This verse is intended to reject the Quraysh, and it contains evidence that whoever rejects a name of Allah has committed disbelief, due to His saying:
and they disbelieve وهم يكفرون
So Allah the Exalted called their rejection disbelief. And there is no doubt that whoever rejects a name of Allah that is established in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is a disbeliever. Why? Because it is a lie against Allah and His Messenger, and whoever lies against Allah and His Messenger is a disbeliever.
And his saying: "When the Quraysh heard this," the apparent meaning, and Allah knows best, is that this is from the category of the general intended to be specific, and that not all of the Quraysh rejected it, but a group from them. However, if a group from the community is approved by the community and not rejected, then it is the statement of them all. Indeed, Allah the Exalted attributed to the Jews in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) what their ancestors did in the time of Moses
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination وإذ أخذنا ميثاقكم ورفعنا فوقكم الطور خذوا ما آتيناكم بقوة
[Al-Baqarah 2:63]
. Did this happen in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in the time of those addressed? No.
