Allah, the Self-Sufficient
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : : This is another independent sentence. After mentioning the oneness (ahadiyyah), he mentioned the self-sufficiency (samadiyyah), and he brought it as a definite sentence at both ends to convey exclusivity, meaning that Allah alone is the Self-Sufficient.
So what is the meaning of the Self-Sufficient? It was said: is the Perfect One, perfect in His knowledge, in His power, in His wisdom, in His majesty, in His nobility, in all His attributes, the Perfect One. Yes.
It was also said: : He who has no cavity, meaning He has no intestines or belly; He has no cavity, He is the Self-Sufficient. For this reason, it was said: the angels are "samud" (self-sufficient) because they have no cavities, for they do not eat or drink. But this meaning is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and does not go beyond the first meaning, because it indicates His self-sufficiency in Himself from all His creation.
It was also said: means the passive form, i.e., the One to whom all creation turns, meaning to whom the creatures turn in their needs, i.e., they incline toward Him, they end with Him, and they raise their needs to Him. So it means the One whom everyone needs.
These sayings do not contradict one another regarding Allah (Mighty and Majestic). For this reason, we say: all the meanings are established because there is no contradiction between them. We explain it with a comprehensive interpretation and say: is the Perfect One in His attributes, to whom all His creations are in need, so they turn to Him. And at that time, the great meaning in the word becomes clear to you: that He is self-sufficient from everything other than Him, perfect in everything by which He is described, and that everything other than Him is in need of Him.
If someone were to say to you: "Allah rose above the Throne," does His rising above the Throne mean that He is in need of the Throne such that if it were removed, He would fall? No. What evidence do you have? Allah is the Self-Sufficient because He is perfect and does not need the Throne, the heavens, the Footstool, or all the created things. All created things need Allah, and Allah is free from needing them. We take this from the word.
If someone were to say to you: "Does Allah eat and drink?" I say: No, far be it. Why? Allah is the Self-Sufficient. And by this, you can infer the rest.
And by this, we know that is a word that encompasses all the attributes of perfection and encompasses all the attributes of deficiency in the created things, and that they are in need of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
