The Shaykh : Good, this distinguished scholar whom the author (may Allah have mercy on him) referred to, the Shaykh says in the explanation of the Alfiyyah: "It is Abu al-Ma'ali al-Juwayni". Abu al-Ma'ali al-Juwayni, and he is one of the imams of the Shafi'i school. And this means I do not know the authenticity of the transmission, because I do not think the man reached this level.
The story: He says, "I want to explain to you that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is not with His essence above the Throne. There is a hadith that refutes the anthropomorphists who say that Allah is with His essence above the Throne. What is it? — May Allah have mercy on you — The hadith is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I and he are equal before Allah the Exalted when he was in the belly of the whale and I was above the seven heavens. And this indicates that height and lowliness are not attributed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. They are attributed to us. Lowliness is the opposite of height; height is at one end and this is at the other end, and they do not meet. But with regard to Allah, they are equal. However, he presented this explanation in the form of a riddle so that people would be eager for it. They said, "Explain this to us." He said, "No, I will not explain it until you give me a thousand of old gold." A thousand dinars. When they gave him a thousand dinars, he explained to them what he was saying, and that Allah is not above the heavens. If He were above the heavens, the nearness of Muhammad to Him would be closer than that of Yunus. But He is in every place. Yunus, Muhammad, and others are on an equal footing. He says: And it indicates that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say, "Do not prefer me over Musa, over Ibrahim, or over any other of the prophets." He said, "Over Yunus," because Yunus is the one who went to the bottom of the sea. And there is no doubt that this, and I seek refuge in Allah, is a distortion driven by desire. It is a distortion that invalidates the truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not address height and lowliness at all. But when Yunus (peace and blessings be upon him) left his people in anger, thinking that Allah could not deal with him, and what happened happened, perhaps some people might lower the rank of Yunus and diminish his status. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified, or the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade preferring Muhammad over this prophet, whom a person might imagine that his status (peace and blessings be upon him) was lowered because of what? Because of what happened to him. Because when you say Muhammad is better than Yunus, and the mind goes to what happened to Yunus, what occurs in your heart? Diminishing his status and lowering him. So he forbade preferring Muhammad over Yunus. Otherwise, it is established that Allah says: [Al-Baqarah 2:253] Yes.
