The Shaykh’s remarks on the virtue of lending and the warning against religious innovations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The paths of goodness are that they sell and they earn lawful money, and then they earn wages that the idle poor, who are not employed, cannot obtain, but rather [they obtain it] through obedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And so, raise the prices of goods or lower them, with you being able to profit one dinar in exchange for lending two dinars, and so on, in proportions that cannot be counted. For this reason, we say that the Muslim, provided that he is a scholar, a student of knowledge, or a listener, and not the fourth [type] who perishes, finds in the abundance of prescribed acts of worship and obedience, with evidence in the Book or the Sunnah, what suffices him from any newly invented matter intended to increase closeness to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). How excellent is what Imam al-Shatibi mentioned, and with his words I conclude my answer: namely, what he mentioned regarding Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), the Imam of the City of Migration, who said: "Whoever innovates in Islam a religious innovation that he considers good has claimed that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) betrayed the message. Read the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
, and the last of this Ummah will not be rectified except by what rectified its first part, so whatever was not a religion at that time will not be a religion today." If Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) rejected i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) in the Great Mosque of Kufa, citing the authentic hadith:
There is no i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) except in three mosques لا اعتكاف إلا في ثلاثة مساجد
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 3:789
, and he mentioned them, and they are known to you, we follow their example and say as the Imam of the City of Migration said: "The last of this Ummah will not be rectified except by what rectified its first part, so whatever was not a religion at that time will not be a religion today."
