The Ruling on the Udhiyah When One Is Able to Afford It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Your Excellency, the Noble Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him).
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
We kindly request your ruling on the following, may you be rewarded:
What is the ruling on the udhiyah? And does one commit a sin by leaving it off when one is able to afford it?

Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet.
As for what follows: The ruling on the udhiyah is that it is a recommended practice (sunnah) when one has financial ease, and it is not obligatory. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sacrifice two brown camels, and the Companions used to sacrifice during his lifetime (peace and blessings be upon him) and after his passing, and so did the Muslims after them. There is no evidence in the Shari'ah texts indicating its obligation, and the opinion that it is obligatory is a weak one.
