Question: A woman asks and says: In the hadith I request clarification of the meaning of the hadith, along with clarification of what is crooked in the upper part of the rib.
Answer: This hadith is authentic; it was narrated by the two Shaykhs in the two Sahihs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: This is obligatory for men, including fathers, brothers, husbands, and others, to fear Allah regarding women and give them their rights. This is the obligation. For this reason, he said: .
It should not be prevented by the fact that they may wrong their husbands and relatives with their tongues or through other inappropriate behaviors, because they were created from a rib, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:.
It is known that the upper part is what is near the root of the rib, for the rib has a curvature in it; this is the known fact. The meaning is that there must be some crookedness and deficiency in her behavior. For this reason, it is established in another hadith in the two Sahihs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih al-Bukhari 304.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the deficiency in intellect by stating that the testimony of two women equals the testimony of one man, which is due to a deficiency in intellect and memory. He explained the deficiency in religion by stating that she remains for days and nights without praying, meaning because of menstruation, and likewise post-natal bleeding. This deficiency is written by Allah for them, and there is no sin upon them for it, but it is a real deficiency that is not permissible to deny, just as it is not permissible to deny that men, in general, are more complete in intellect and religion. This does not preclude the existence of good women who are better than some men, because the preference relates to the preference of the male species over the female species, and it does not prevent that there are individuals among women who are better than individuals among men in knowledge and religion, as is the reality.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the woman to acknowledge this and to believe the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he said, and to stay within her limit, and to ask Allah for success, and to strive in good. As for attempting to oppose the Shari'ah in what Allah and His Messenger have decreed, this is an ugly error and a great abomination that is not permissible for her to do, and Allah is the One to be sought for help.
Treat women with kindness, for the woman was created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its upper part...
